ADIA Lab Symposium on Climate Change and Health Sciences to open tomorrow
ADIA Lab will open its inaugural ADIA Lab Symposium tomorrow, 7 November 2023.
The two-day event, held at ADGM in Abu Dhabi, will examine how data science, blockchain, high performance computing and AI can be utilised to address key challenges in climate change and health sciences, two of the lab’s focus areas.
The event has attracted a range of international expert speakers, including government officials and members of ADIA Lab’s Advisory Board along with ADIA Lab Fellows and principal researchers. Registered delegates include representatives from domestic and international academic, research, government and corporate organisations. The event will also be broadcast online, with joining instructions posted on the ADIA Lab website: www.adialab.ae
Highlights include:
Professor Steven Chu, former US Energy Secretary and winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics, and Professor Sandy Pentland, Toshiba Professor of Media, Arts and Sciences at MIT and director of MIT’s Media Lab, will deliver keynote speeches on climate change issues on 7 November.
Professor Jack Dongarra, winner of the 2021 Turing Award, will present applications of supercomputing to climate and weather prediction.
H.E. Carme Artigas, Spain’s Secretary of State for Digitization and AI, and H.E. Ínigo de Palacio España, Ambassador of Spain in the UAE, will speak about the opportunities and challenges created by AI, some of which have implications for policy makers and international relations.
Professor Miguel Hernan, Kolokotrones Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health and winner of the 2022 Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics, will deliver the keynote on health sciences on 8 November.
The event’s agenda also includes numerous other presentations and discussion panels, along with case studies on ADIA Lab-funded research projects, using data and analytics on climate change and health sciences-related topics.
Dr Horst Simon, ADIA Lab’s Director and twice-winner of the Gordon Bell Award, said: “The ADIA Lab Symposium, which will be held annually, is part of our commitment to playing an active role in the international data and computational science community, and contributing to the development of Abu Dhabi’s digital ecosystem.
“We have convened a group of world class speakers who are widely recognised as among the leading thinkers in their fields. As a result, we expect the Symposium to act as a catalyst for further discussions, collaborations and research into two of ADIA’s Lab’s priority topics: climate change and health science.”
